As part of NINFA’s methodology for societal engagement, surveys will be carried out to access societal awareness and knowledge on water and its management as well as perception on water quality and water reuse. To this end, our social scientist from IMT Atlantique carried out a second survey in Los Alcazares, Spain.
The aim was to collect qualitative data through semi-structured interviews on users’ perceptions of water related issues (water stress, climate change, water resources quality, etc.) as well as their knowledge and perception of uses water.
In between interviews, they also took the opportunity to explore the city, adjacent to the Mar Menor, Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon. Intense agricultural activities, tourism, urbanization and artificialization of the land have all led to heavy pollution, with major impacts on the ecosystem of the Mar Menor, (anoxia, eutrophication). Consequently, taking care of water (as a place to live, an ecosystem and a resource) has become a collective necessity, as evidenced by the wealth of information available on the subject.
