Groundwater is one of Europe’s most valuable freshwater resources, playing a critical role in supplying drinking water, supporting agriculture, industry, and ecosystems. However, increasing pressures from pollution, climate change, and growing water demand are making its protection and sustainable management more important than ever.
To address these challenges, the NINFA project is bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and decision-making through innovative digital tools and evidence-based policy support.
At the core of this effort is the NINFA Knowledge Observatory, an integrated platform that brings together scientific evidence, environmental data, monitoring technologies, and risk assessment tools. By consolidating fragmented information into a comprehensive knowledge framework, the Observatory helps stakeholders gain a deeper understanding of groundwater systems and contamination risks.
Yet, generating knowledge is only part of the solution.
Building on the project’s scientific outcomes, the NINFA Policy Brief translates research findings into practical recommendations for policymakers. The document highlights how digital solutions, integrated risk assessment methodologies, and nature-based approaches can strengthen groundwater governance and contribute to more resilient and sustainable water management practices across Europe.
From knowledge to action
The NINFA approach demonstrates how innovation can support better decision-making by enabling:
- Integrated analysis of groundwater quality and contamination risks.
- Improved access to scientific and environmental data.
- Evidence-based policy development.
- More effective implementation of European water management strategies.
As Europe advances its ambitions for water resilience and sustainable resource management, initiatives such as NINFA showcase the importance of connecting research, innovation, and policymaking to safeguard groundwater resources for future generations.
